Since my husband and I have started researching haunted legends and locations in Tennessee and surrounding southern states, we have been to a lot of interesting places. We’ve also learned to appreciate our history. The legends and the history have made it worthwhile. But every once in a while we get more than a lesson in ghost lore, paranormal phenomena and historic facts. Old Bluff Mountain is such a place.
In Sevierville, Tn, not far from Dollywood and the tourist trap that is Pigeon Forge & Gatlinburg, you can step back in time while visiting a bluff that has the best vantage point where you can see seven counties below and wide open skies as far as the eye can see. After we got there we almost forgot the sole reason we came. The initial attraction was the numerous reports of ghostly apparitions & disembodied voices at the site of an old hotel popular in the 1920′s. Of course the old hotel is long gone. Not even the remains clutter the ground where it once stood, it burned in the 1930′s and the site was never used for commercial purposes again. Campers & hikers enjoy the place, and maybe a few spirits as well.
There is an old cemetery a few hundred feet off of one of the trails, dating back to the 1790′s when the Bluff’s were used as a lookout point for the Continental Army to watch for the Indians. Many were slaughtered in their sleep - and it is said that those are the restless spirits that still remain. I can attest to the theory that the army could have seen for miles if the Indians were traveling the road once used as a trade route. There, atop their mountain the army could literally plan their attack far in advance.
We did not experience anything out of the ordinary and in my opinion this site probably is not haunted, but there have been those who claim otherwise. Irregardless, it is worth visiting just because I have never seen a “visitor’s” lookout point that can beat this one. If you’re looking for the paranormal, I am not convinved this has anything to offer, but the fact is, spirits do not haunt on a schedule that always fits ours.
If you have haunting experiences here, or elsewhere feel free to share them with us.
